All Second Saturday Programs take place on the second Saturday of each month and are held at Parkway Partners, which is located at 1137 Baronne Street (corner of Clio).  The gates are open from 9am-noon, with the speaker presenting at 10am.  Every discussion is accompanied by a plant sale where the plants reflects that day’s topic and the current planting season.

2013 Schedule

January 12, 2013Alan Vaughn will speak on Growing Citrus in New Orleans.  Vaughn is considered the greatest local authority on growing citrus and serves as the Plaquemines Parish LSU Agricultural extension agent.  Available at Parkway Partners’ Greenhouse:  citrus and fig trees, many various trees for landscaping; winter vegetable plants; colorful flowering plants.

MARCH 2, 2013, 8 a.m. to noon – Tree and Plant Sale with the Department of Parks and Parkways

Mark your calendar for our BIGGEST plant sale, being conducted on the Gentilly site of the Department of Parks and Parkways. Department staff will guide your purchases.

Dan Gill will be on site and will deliver a workshop at 10.  2829 Gentilly Blvd

March 11, 2013 – Talking Dirt with Grant Estrade of Laughing Buddha Nursery. Grant talks about how to analyze and remediate soil for optimum growing conditions with an emphasis on sustainable methods. Available at the Greenhouse: Trees, LA SuperPlants, vegetables, herbs, color and lots of pine straw for mulching.

April 13, 2013 – Beginning with Bees – Russell Harris Learn how to start your own colony of bees, and keep this indispensable species’ numbers growing.

Available at the Greenhouse: Vegetables, herbs, LA SuperPlants and color.

May 11, 2013 –Sourcing Local Foods– Launch the New Orleans 2013 Locavore Effort with Lee Stafford and Master Gardener Melissa Luer. Learn how to source the best local foods and grow your own, in any size space, at home. Vegetables and herbs grown right out your back door are the tastiest.  Available at the Greenhouse: Vegetable and herb starts, 15 gallon plastic pots for micro-gardening, Square Foot Garden plans, LA SuperPlants and warm season color.

June 8, 2013 – Utilizing grey water

At the Greenhouse:  warm season vegetables, herbs, summer color that can take the heat, pine straw to help keep down those summer weeds.

July 13, 2013 – The Urban Chicken - Learn about raising chickens in the city.

August 10, 2013 – Plants that are Super! Allen Owings from the LSU Hammond Research Center will speak on LA Super Plants and the plants that grow most easily in New Orleans.

At Greenhouse:  herbs, sun loving tropicals, LA SuperPlants of course!

September 14, 2013Kitchen Gardening and Urban Farming with Kasey Mitchell, ARC Vintage Gardens Farmer and Permaculturist.  At Greenhouse:  Vegetable and herb starts, companion plants that attract pollinators and resist pests, fruit trees.
